Keeping the long Night
A Winter Solstice Vigil held in the Long House
This is a place to sit inside winter
On the longest night of the year, a small circle will gather in the Long House, deep in the forests of Blackwood.
This is a place to sit inside winter.
To be held within it, just as the land is held.
Midwinter has long been understood as a threshold. The light draws inward, the pace of the world softens, and something older becomes easier to sense. In the old ways, this time was marked by gathering close to the warmth of the house, tending the fire, sharing food, and keeping presence through the long night.
This vigil is held in that spirit.
We will arrive in the late afternoon, welcomed into the warmth of the Long House with an elderberry brew gently infused with rosemary.
Rosemary stands as a keeper of the living threshold. She moves between breath and memory, dream and waking, guiding what is ready to be remembered into embodied form. Throughout the night, her presence will be woven quietly through the space, holding clarity, protection, and a steady thread of remembrance as we enter the depth of winter together.
As evening settles, we will share a nourishing winter meal by candlelight, prepared in honour of ancestral foodways. A slow-cooked pottage of legumes, grains, roots and greens, reflecting the kinds of foods that have sustained people through the colder months for generations.
The meal is an important part of the night, grounding us into the body and into the shared rhythm of the house.
Dietary requirements can be noted in the booking form and will be accommodated where possible.
From here, the evening opens.
Stories may be spoken as they arise. The old winter tales, the Cailleach who holds the land in her keeping, and the quiet movement of the unseen that belongs to this time of year. There will be moments of reflection, moments of stillness, and space to simply rest within the depth of the season.
Nothing is required of you here.
You are welcome to be as you are.
The space will be held in a floor-based, communal way, with beds laid out within the living room of the Long House. You will be invited to bring your own bedding and create a simple resting place for the night, settling into the shared rhythm of the space.
In the morning, we will gather again for a warm breakfast. A simple porridge with seasonal plant foods such as nettle, elderberry and hawthorn, where available. These are plants long associated with nourishment, resilience, and the quiet tending of the body through winter.
We will close gently and step back into the returning light together.
This is a small and intimate gathering, open to those who feel called to spend a night in quiet relationship with winter, held in a living home, beside the warmth of the fire.
